Bon,
I can hardly believe that I missed this till now! Grand Asia is such a wonderful variety, and I probably won't be able to sell slips of it this year. I ate a couple roots over the winter, enjoying them greatly. But in the last three years I've had an increasing number of them turn up with orange flesh. Not only is it orange, but it's moist, not at all like the original, which is fairly dry. Anyway, I went through my entire supply on the 17th of this month, and only found one small root with white flesh, the right color for the variety. I'll be doing well to get enough slips for myself this year, and hopefully they'll have the white flesh.
I actually grew out some of the orange fleshed sports, thinking of starting a new variety, but honestly, I don't think it's good enough to do that.
I've grown White Eclipse two summers now. This winter I got to truly trial it for eating quality. It's not the same, but at least it's close to Grand Asia. I believe it will produce about as well too.
I'm not so fond of the flavor of Molokai, but I have customers who really want it and, my son tells me it's his favorite. So, there are those who have a taste for it. Micah Anderson, from OSU gave me some roots of Becca Purple, last fall. I'm starting some now. I did try one and found it to have a sweeter flavor than Molokai. It's not as dark in color, but it is purple. Hopefully the roots produce an abundance of slips.
