I think it was last Saturday that my husband cut down the bolted lettuce for me and buried it under compost in the garden bed. I had a couple of Seminole pumpkin vines that had made it all the way over the trellis, so we buried parts of those, too, and they’re growing nicely. I’m trying to give them some time on the soil before training them back up the trellis. Another section of vine has reached up and grabbed onto a Live Oak branch that stretches a little bit over that garden bed. It was hard to get a good photo because of the bright sun this morning, but I hope it gives an idea. Every time I see it I feel as though the pumpkin has gone back to its origins in Florida. I believe the story is that the Spanish explorers were shocked to see these vines and fruits hanging from trees where the Seminole tribe cultivated them in clearings. I don’t know that I’ll get to see that, but I like to see my plant trying. There is a volunteer pumpkin in this bed, but it is being dwarfed and overpowered by the one Seminole plant that I have. It’s just an amazing grower.
