Stewart's Zeebest got sneaky with me this year. I thought the Zeebest I sowed in early May had all drowned, but not so. They've been coming up in the understory of the other okra I replaced them with. Naturally they are underdeveloped hiding in the shade of other okras, but I've eaten them and they are really good!

It has been a long time since I've seen a post about Zeebest. I miss growing that variety. I crossed it with Heavy Hitter once, the results were a half-ribbed, half-smooth pod that was not very marketable, but it was very interesting. If I wasn't into saving seeds so much, I'd do it again, just for fun.

Earlier in the year, when I was deciding which okra varieties to grow this year, and my deer had already decided that it didn't matter to them about the variety because they were going to eat down to the ground regardless, I tried to order some Stewart's Zeebest seed and it was out of stock everywhere. I've decided now to only plant Heavy Hitter because I may only have room for one row inside my deer-resistant multi-plex supermax-high-security fully-enclosed garden-compound.© If not for that, I'm certain I would plant some Zeebest, I like the looks of it...

Woodeye, I hope you can keep the deer out next year. Those dern deer can be very aggravating! But it's tough to stay mad at them for very long when I see the little spotted ones out there swiping the corn out of my chicken's feed trough. They're kind of cute when they sneak up to see if I have any treats for them. I just have to keep a maximum security type fence around my garden. It looks like a POW camp out there with the 7' foot tall electric fence and the zig-zagged barbed wire in the back to keep them from jumping through. It ain't purdy, but it's functional.

I don't care what my battlefield ends up looking like either. As long as it works, I'll be thrilled about it. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Saturday, Oct. 1st. If I can get it built during the month of October, that's quick enough for me. It's sad that a person has to build an enclosure such as you had to, and I'll have to, but otherwise gardening is a waste of time and money. That is unless you just plant it solely for the purpose of feeding deer...
