My new helper and I got a little over 400 okra seeds tucked under the plastic before we got rained out this morning. I hurt like the devil now though, but I'm satisfied with what we got accomplished. That's two rows down, only ten more left to go.

My hard-working helper, Anthony, and I finally finished all of our planting here. We now have 12 rows of Heavy Hitter Okra double planted in our irrigated, raised beds of Plasticulture, each row being about 150' feet long on average.
I started to walk the rows to count how many plantings that was, but with a broken ankle and on crutches, I only made it to 2,000 before I gave up.
It sure does feel nice to be done with that project. Thank you, God!
(Thank you, Anthony!) Your help was much appreciated.

That's wonderful, Ron! I meant to plant okra this weekend but "life" got in the way. Hopefully this week.

Who knows, George, maybe I'll be over at your house someday soon helping you get your okra planted? I went back to the foot-bone doctor today and was told that the bone in my ankle has already knitted back together. That thing grew back faster than a lizard's tail!
It still hurts to walk on it, but the swelling finally went down enough to get a walking cast put on it today. It ought to start healing nicely now.
Some of the seeds that we planted last week are already popping up! This has been absolutely wonderful seed-germinating weather! It sure does feel good knowing that all of my planting is finally done.
We got a good deal of rain on the seeds just hours after they were sown. Then, after all of the rain we got last weekend, it rained here again today so hard that Margaret said it sounded like the rain was going to beat the shingles off the roof!
Hopefully, that was enough to kill a whole slew of grasshoppers out there. It sure was frustrating last week while planting our seeds to see so many little grasshopper hatchlings hopping in every direction. There were tens of thousands of them, from the size of fleas to about a quarter inch in length.
I'll bet today's heavy downpour drowned quite a few of them.

At the University, where I work, we had leaks in the roof which we hadn't seen for years. That rain was spectacular! Still, when got home in the afternoon, and finally got into the garden, things were looking wonderful!

Good morning.
Has anyone tried Heavy Hitter Okra in containers? I’m considering 1/2 of a 55 gallon barrel to see how it does but wondered if this has already been attempted and what the results were.

Wagonerfarm,
I've had good luck growing single Heavy Hitter Okra plants in 25-gallon plastic tubs in years past.
It does better in the garden, but if a tub is all you've got then that's all you've got. I tried an experiment this season by cutting the bottom out of a 25-gallon tub and filling it with all sorts of composted goodies, so the okra planted inside could make a longer tap root, but my dogs and my chickens will not leave it alone long enough for anything to grow in there. (That's very frustrating)! I've replanted that tub several times this year, starting way back in March, but I have a relentless Beagle pup who loves sniffing around, looking for anything that I plant, so he can dig it up and destroy it later. That's why I no longer have a fig tree here.
Best of luck with your potting experiment. Keep us posted.
Ron

Thanks for response. I had planted other varieties in my okra patch before I found your site and seeds, so I’m limited this year. Next year, Lord willing, I’ll put them in the ground where they belong, but I’m gonna try some in barrels this year and see how they do.
Thanks again!

Years ago I put okra in a large pot, about the size of a half whiskey barrel. I think there was only one in it along with a pepper plant and some oregano. It grew and made a few pods. It was NOT heavyhitter variety, so multiple branches might produce more. Good luck.

I found an old picture of an okra stalk that I planted in one of the tubs that holds minerals of some kind for cattle. This was back in 2008, the first year that I had a camera that would take digital pictures. It's Clemson Spineless Okra and only one stalk, but it made all the pods it could and considering that it was planted in straight peat moss I think it did fairly well...

Wow, hedgeapple. That’s great. You’re way ahead of us on okra [and beans]. I’m trying to renew some Hill Country Red seed, so we’re waiting to sow Heavy Hitter till a little later in the season. My Hill Country Red is only ankle high at the most right now, though. I had a rough time with germinating my first batch, and some of my second transplanted batch has either been burned up in the sun or cut off by insects or cutworms. I’m very much looking forward to the excitement of the first okra flower, though. Yours is a beauty.

Wow!
Hedgeapple, that's wonderful! I count myself lucky if I have okra, corn, or tomatoes by July 4th. It looks like you're going to beat that by about 2 weeks!
Keep up the good work.

Well done, hedgeapple
heavyhitterokra So you think you’ll have blossoms in a couple weeks? Are the hoppers giving you much grief at the moment?
