Great work, woodeye. I’m glad you’re taking the day off tomorrow, and please don’t take this wrong, but I’m hoping for some inclement (but not violent) weather to slow you down. Oklahoma needs more moisture, and we’d really be grateful if you send it along down to us once you’ve had your fill.

Great work, woodeye . I’m glad you’re taking the day off tomorrow, and please don’t take this wrong, but I’m hoping for some inclement (but not violent) weather to slow you down. Oklahoma needs more moisture, and we’d really be grateful if you send it along down to us once you’ve had your fill. Thank You. Yes, I plan to take tomorrow off, but I want you to know that I did not take it wrong, let there be rain! And then even more rain! I would gladly donate any rainfall that I could to your area, you need it much more than I do. Hopefully we will all get some much needed moisture soon.
Once the chainlink fence fabric is installed on the east and west sides, I'll have a 2 to 3 month lull in construction. The north and south ends of the Iron Curtain will remain open until all tilling is done next year. In the meantime I will continue to work at hauling more material from the chainlink fence boneyard for the ends, plus get some woodworking projects done out in the shop...

That certainly raises a question. Are you planning on tilling in future years? If so, can you do it with the ends closed?...or are you contemplating some large, swinging gates? That could be fun, lol!

The tiller on my tractor is 5 feet wide, so I made the Iron Curtain 23 feet wide. That way I can make 4 full width passes when tilling, and have 1-1/2' clearance on each side, in theory. I have a walk behind tiller, but have not used it since before I bought the tractor with tiller back in 2009. As far as closing in the north and south ends, I did think a bit about having 2 doors on each end that swing to the middle. Ideally that would be the best. I haven't totally excluded that idea, but I'm also considering using 8 foot pieces of cattle panel stood on end, with chainlink fence fabric wired to the cattle panes. I can man-handle 8 foot pieces all right. I could have horizontal pipes across the north and south ends too, with temporary t-posts driven for them to be fastened. I would have to buy 5 cattle panels though, that is the sticking point on that idea...

I really didn't figure that this would happen, but work on the Iron Curtain has been suspended because of an unforeseen circumstance: Mud. I'll see how it goes, I might be able to start on the chainlink fence fabric by the weekend, but right now that's TBD...

When we first moved to Texas, we used to comment on how there isn’t really mud here, and quite frankly we didn’t miss having to deal with little muddy boots in the house. After this prolonged drought, the idea of mud actually sounds delightful to me. I now I’d feel differently about it if it prevented me from working in my garden when I need to, though.
Congratulations on the rain, though. I’m glad you got some much needed moisture.

Thanks, it is a change of pace having mud. I inspected the area out there today, and if it was just out in the pasture that has not been tilled, I could work on it sooner. But the tilled garden is too muddy to work in. I'm thinking now that if I give it a day or so, I might at least be able to start on the fence fabric, and just wire it up temporarily from outside the garden. If so, I could start as soon as Thursday. Once the garden area dries out I can work from the garden side to wire the fabric permanently...

I saw deer tracks inside the Iron Curtain area this morning. Following the tracks, I saw that it came from the north, stopped, took a few steps, then bounded out towards the middle, stopped again, then made a beeline towards the horizontal pipes on the east side, then the tracks disappeared because, BOING!, it jumped over the 4 foot pipe. Four feet height is laughable for those silly things, but I am now working on the fence fabric and hope to someday put a stop to the laughing deer.
If I was naming my Company, it would most likely be named: Little, Bit, & Slowly, LLC. Because that's all I got done today during my complimentary 3 hour workday. At least it will give Mr. & Mrs. Deer something to start looking at or thinking about. This fence fabric is 6 feet tall, wish I had lots more of it. Unfortunately I don't have enough 6 foot fabric for both of the sides, so the wire splicing will become more complicated soon. The black wire at the far end is sort of beat up, but there aren't any gaping holes in it, so it will work...

I was hoping to check this thread tonight and see that you had been able to make some progress today. What a magnificent accomplishment! That looks very nice! That made my day to see that much fence fabric hanging in place already.
It was just an added bonus to see that your ground there got a good soaking since the last time I saw a photo too.
Keep up the good work!

I finally got caught up on your thread woodeye. I’ve been lagging behind. Wife has been dragging me all over the countryside which doesn’t leave much forum time. I now need to go back through and like some posts, I sometimes forget to do things the first time around. Hahahaaa! What can I say? What’s that called when you can’t walk and chew gum at the same time???

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I've decided to drive the Kubota to the fence boneyard again in the morning, with the hope that I can scare up a bit more 6 foot fence fabric. I have one more partial roll of 6 foot already hauled to the the war zone, but it's probably only about half of what I need for the other side. If I can come up with about 35 more feet of 6 foot fabric, I'll be a very pleased fence builder by tomorrow sometime...

It would probably be best if you and I waited for some of the more gifted people on the forum, the ones that can actually walk and chew gum at the same time, to chime in...

ALERT!
In the spirit of football season, the weather guessers fumbled the forecast yet again. The Fence Builder had to work today.
Yes, it was determined by the aforementioned weather guessers that it would rain here all night long, but it did not come to pass. (No football pun intended) I had to drive the Kubota to the fence boneyard first thing today, then locate and wrassle chainlink fence fabric that was of the 6 foot size. Luckily I have now procured enough to put 6 foot height fabric on the bottom section of both sides. Very pleased with the outcome, although all that wrasslin caused me to expend enormous amounts of energy, so I only got about 50 more feet of fabric standing up today. I am scheduled to visit my brother tomorrow, but will finish the remainder of the bottom sections on both sides Sunday. Today's output has been deemed acceptable...

I think wrassling six-foot-high fence fabric, especially enough to finish out your other side, is quite an accomplishment in and of itself. Hanging up another fifty feet of fabric is far more than acceptable; it exceeds expectations. Doing both on the same day is outstanding.
