heavyhitterokra, I was wondering if it would be a bother for you to pull out the part of this thread that deals with ollas and terracotta watering spikes and move it to its own thread with a creative title like “Ollas and Terracotta Watering Spikes” in either the Gizmo sub forum or the Tips sub forum. I feel bad that I kind of derailed macmex’s original topic, but there’s a lot to be said about this one, and I thought it might be better to separate the two if that isn’t too much trouble. No big deal if that doesn’t work, but it popped into my head, and I thought I’d ask.

Chrysanthemum,
Will do. I don't believe for a second anyone feels 'hijacked' I believe we've all been enjoying the extra input on watering in the sun, but I'll get started right away on transplanting this topic over to its new location in the 'Tips and Tricks' category, under the heading of 'Extras'.
I've titled it, "Ollas, Terracotta Watering Spikes, and Other Irrigation Tips".
I'm not sure how to transfer the photos though, so I might need some help there ... Sorry about that. I'll do my best.

Years ago I got into the habit of only watering the base of my plants - not the leaves unless I am applying a foliar spray of some kind. Never had a problem with burnt leaves.

Around here, April is when our daytime temps usually start getting into the 100'sF, and many days that happens a little after sunrise. Most days throughout the year the relative humidity is in the teens and lower. Wether I'm using drip irrigation or watering with a hose by hand - I need to irrigate at dawn, at dusk and often around midday. When watering around midday all I need do is place the cool (non heated hose water) onto the soil or mulch, not on the leaves - to avoid foliage damage. BTW, the damage caused by applying cool/cold water to sun warmed foliage is usually what is called mesophil collapse, caused by sudden temperature change. All plants do not have the same sensitivity to this problem, some are more sensitive than others.
