john, Thank You for the welcome! I'm having a great time here, learning new things every day.
Also re-learning things I had completely forgotten about.
It has been a blast...

I still have a 1x12x36” Walnut board that I bought in 1987 in Pasadena, Texas. I was big into woodworking back then. One of these days I’ll make something just for me since I’ve wagged it around all these years. I had another chunk, but me and a knife maker friend make a few knife handles. I have all kinds of exotic wood for knife handles. African Blackwood, Bloodwood, Purple Heart, Shucks I dunno what all is in my pile that I’ve collected all these years. Whoever has the misfortune of going through my junk when I’m gone will probably send it right off to the landfill. Hahaha!

hmoosek, your lumber's value has done nothing but increase, that is certain. That African Blackwood, if I'm not mistaken, is very, very expensive stuff. Well, it's all expensive for that matter. I love woodworking, but I have to do it for the love of it because profit-wise it doesn't make sense to do it.
I've made countless sets of these coaster sets, these are made with walnut. I've made them out of oak, ash, red cedar as well. They can be cut out with a bandsaw, scrollsaw, or jigsaw. The easiest way to make the indentation is to drill it out with a drill press and a 3" forstner bit. I've got a 4" forstner bit somewhere, but haven't been able to find it. I rounded the edges on a router table, then sanded them smooth on a cushion contour sander.
I've redesigned the coaster sets and I want to start on the new design this winter. They will be large enough for a mug with a large diameter base to fit on them. I want to inlay the ends of the holders too, that is going to take some practice. I'll start out with quartersawn sycamore lumber, with aspen lumber for the inlays. (fingers crossed)

Very Nice coasters! Back in the 80’s, I made clocks, bread boxes, mailbox covers, etc It was just a hobby. My best seller were the tabletop reindeer and sleighs. I sold them for 10 dollars a pop. I quit woodworking and started blacksmithing and I did that for about 10 years, then a joined a flyfishing club and started tying flies, but These days I just sit around whittling.
Most expensive hobby ever was fly tying. You might as well open your wallet and say “here, just take it all!”

hmoosek You said that nowadays you just sit around whittling. I used to do that a lot too, and will do some of it again one of these days. This picture is from back in my 'sitting around whittling' days. They're called Wood Spirits, and this one is carved from an elm tree limb. I used to take the chainsaw to the pasture and cut a few limbs off of an elm tree, then saw it into firewood size pieces. I carved the pieces while the elm was still green, it carves real easy with sharp chisels. Once it dries, it's hard as a rock and it's too much work to carve it. But yeah, I know what you mean, I'd open my billfold and say "here, take all I've made during the last year in woodworking, both dollars"

That's all I do too, when the temperatures out in the shop are reasonable, or if it's raining, etc., I get out there and stir up the wood dust, just piddling...

spike woodeyeMost stuff I carve I’ve watched someone else carve first. I’m not overly creative, so i watch others and try to put my own spin on it. I enjoy it. The first thing I did was a coffee spoon and I was hooked!
