George,
Today is February 15, 2017 I planted sixteen Roselle seeds in a starter tray, on a heating pad today. I'll probably be starting more as time goes by. Maybe next year, I'll be able to read this post and know if that was a good starting date.
Thanks for the seeds, Ron

Today is February 18, 2017.
My Roselle has germinated!
I have re-potted 3 of the 16 Roselle seeds that I planted On February 15th, and have them sitting in their pots with my Heavy Hitter okra plant under a grow light in my South facing kitchen window. They'll have a home in my new HugelKulture pile this Spring.
I am so excited! I think I have as many Roselle plants already germinated, as George grew total last year! Thank you again, George, for the seeds you so generously passed along. I plan on returning the favor someday by passing many more of these seeds along to others as the years go by.
One god turn deserves another.

George, It's March 16th. I have 15 Roselle seedlings that are about 8' inches tall with three sets of leaves. I probably planted them too early, beings how it's going to be 30 more days before the weather levels off enough to set them out in the garden.
I'll probably plant a second batch this weekend.

I just planted a dishpan full of Roselle. The seeds practically jumped up out of the ground! Can't wait for this year's crop!

George,
I just finished sprouting a dozen Roselle seeds by placing them on a moist napkin in a 2"x 3" Ziplock seed bag. I kept them warm yesterday by carrying the bag in my shirt pocket all day doing chores. It worked really well this time, but I can see how it would be really easy to forget they were in there and accidentally send them through the washing machine.
Roselle seeds are heart shaped. I was surprised to see the root tip emerge from the round part at the top of the heart-shaped seeds.

I planted some Roselle last week along with some tomatoes and eggplant. The Roselle sprouted before I even saw one tomato or eggplant! It will be interesting to see if I can get a crop here.

I've got 27 little Roselle sprouts started so far. I've been working on building a stone arch bridge across the little creek behind my house this week and have dug up some of the prettiest silty loam you ever saw. I'm thinking about trying a Roselle in a fancy pot in front of my house, planted in the silt I dug today.

March 28, 2017 George,
I direct sowed a half dozen Roselle seeds outside today in a sunny location. It was 75 degrees today... The temperature of the soil was 66 degrees.
I have about twenty or so planted in starter pots.
Hopefully, this will be a great year for Roselle!

I transplanted a few of my Roselle seedlings outdoors on Saturday, April 8th. So far, they're doing great! They love all this sunlight and are doing better than the others that are still in the pots. I'm looking forward to watching them really take off during this warm weather.

Right now, there is still time to plant Roselle, especially from transplants. All of mine, that are going to get planted this year, are out in the garden. I believe I have about 16 plants. I just don't have room for more.
I spoke with Glenn Drowns, of Sandhill Preservation Center. He says he starts his Roselle direct seeded in the garden, once nights warm up. But he hasn't had a lot of success with it, as rabbits eat the small plants. I'm glad I don't have to worry about rabbits as much as he does. Next year I will probably experiment with direct seeding. This year my transplants were at least 6" tall when I put them out. They had stalled out, in their flat, before I could put them out.
This year I started my seed for germination, in damp paper towels and plastic bags, in my kitchen, on March 9. They were sprouting by March 13. I transplanted my first transplants into the garden on May 20/

HI George I have Roselle in the garden, it hasn't done much yet but it's starting to grow now. We had a very cool rainy spring and the Roselle was obviously very unhappy. It kind of folded it's leaves and even changed color. It is doing much better now that summer weather is here.

I have some Roselle in a planter on the South side of my house by the water hose. It looks happier than the Roselle in my garden. I have bugs in my garden that eat all the leaves off right to the stem, but at the house in their pot there are no signs of stress.

I planted seven plants in my main garden and nine in a garden on the North side of our house, where we had some Rose of Sharon shrubs. They are all looking happy now. They all sat there, not looking sad, but not growing, for several weeks. I believe Roselle, like okra, likes heat and humidity.

I have a Roselle plant growing in my highly acidic blueberry patch, branching like crazy, and happy as a clam! I didn't even remember planting one there, but it's doing better than any of the ones that I do remember planting. Weeds there don't seem to bother it at all. (Talk about plant it and forget it, this one takes the cake!)
I'm looking forward to lots of bright red calyx come late August. I can hardly wait to drink the tea. We really enjoyed the ones George shared with us last Autumn. We drank the tea until Christmas.
