Mrh,
I just saw your order pop up on my email right before I checked here. I thought I recognized the location from a previous post. We'll get you fixed up as soon as the Post Office opens in the morning. Too bad we have to wait until Spring to plant again. I just did a germination test on the seeds we harvested last month and have little okra sprouts all over the place. It always seems wrong to discard them after the germ test, just because it's the wrong time of year.
Thanks for the order. Ron

We finally finished shelling out all of the okra pods. We winnowed them yesterday and began the bagging process, but about 60 pounds into it, our digital scale fried. I ordered a new one, but it will be November 20th before it gets here.

Mrh,
It does my heart good to hear that you received your order so fast. Sometimes, the U.S. Postal Service amazes me.

We received our 2024 Baker Creek Whole Seed Catalog in the mail today. I'll bet the mailman hates those things. The 2024 catalog is 532 pages thick.
I guess we're moving up in the world, they gave Heavy Hitter Okra a full quarter-page space this time. That was pretty cool to see. Last year, I had to look for our listing because they gave it a smaller space and only pictured some okra pods. This year, they put a photo of me picking okra in my garden. That made it a lot easier to spot.

They were probably holding back a bit out of doubt about whether or not you could supply as much seed as that quarter page might generate demand for. It's an extremely rare person who can do such a thing, or who would.
Seed production for commercial use is a daunting task and usually doesn't pay well at all for the individual grower. I think it has to be a labor of love.

Oh… people have no idea what letter carriers with walking routes have to deal with. My dread was IKEA catalog day. They all had to be delivered the exact same day, which meant that if you had a walking loop with 40 houses on it, a stack of 40 went into your bag. I know a guy who has back problems to this day because he stepped wrong off a high curb with a satchel full of IKEA catalogs.

We've sure been getting a lot of seed orders lately! Packing envelopes has been keeping me pretty busy this week. Our new digital scale finally got here, so we were able to weigh up all of the seeds. We came in right at 123 pounds this year.
Total shipping weight, boxes, seed bags, and all was 131.3 pounds. I won't know what shipping costs are until sometime next week.

Hank & Cookie's Believe it or not! Counting the 123 pounds of Heavy Hitter Okra seeds that Hank and I have harvested and sold this year, our total seed sales since 2019 equals 553 pounds of H.H. Okra seeds.
At 7,462 seeds per pound, that comes up to about 4,126,486 seeds that we've harvested, hand-shelled, culled, winnowed, and sold to Baker Creek over the past 5 years.
If placed end to end, 66 seeds per linear foot, those seeds would reach 11.84 miles!
If planted one foot apart, those 4,126,486 seeds would form a continuous row of okra reaching from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Columbus, Ohio, with 5 miles to spare!
If planted 18" inches apart, the row would reach from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with enough seeds left over to plant another 4 miles.
*Miles between destinations are calculated here as the 'crow flies' not in driving distances.* We don't like planting crooked rows.

Amazing info, heavyhitterokra ! That's a long, long row. It would be nice to find out if the grasshoppers that plague your garden would follow the long row and move north or east.
Oops, Virginia residents might not like that idea. Sorry about that theory, rdback , chrysanthemum , hedgeapple , it was merely in the interest of grasshopper science.
Anyway, you've done an outstanding job of producing a multitude of okra seeds again this year, great job!

Baker Creek sent confirmation that our seeds arrived at their facility safe and sound. That sure is a load off of our minds and shoulders for sure! (Thank you, God, for that!)
It's always worrisome to say, "Goodbye" to so many month's worth of effort when the UPS truck pulls away from our house loaded with those boxes of seeds headed for Missouri. Now, we can finally relax.

I just finished germination testing another batch of Heavy Hitter Okra seeds. They tested out at 97% germination. Not to shabby!
