It sounded out there, to me too; until I read the letter he received from the local postmaster of his Marana, AZ post office. In it the postmaster all but says they're suspending mail delivery to his address, and holding all their mail, until they surender the missing package. Using the, Informed Delivery service, which I'd signed them up for, many years ago. I was able to determine that packages, destined for my DVD collecting nephew where, "being held at the post office, at the customer's request". None of us has ever asked the post office to hold any of our mail. And I understand that a delivery attempt notice should be left, so the customer can make alternate delivery arrangements. Not a single delivery attempt notice made it to their mail box. By the way, said mail box is just outside the chainlink fence surrounding the property, neither they nor any nearby neighbors have dogs. The delivery person delivers by automobile, anyways. I had several Navy buddies who went on to be USPS delivery persons.
It seems the suspension of services and hold are being done under the guise of a legitimate customer hold request. The local manager will send a letter to the address for which service is being declined, but this sounds strange, and when I say ‘strange’ I mean that this is abnormal behavior for a post office. Packages get misdelivered and lost all the time - that is what shipping insurance is for. This local office must be 100% convinced that the package was stolen by the residents at that address, and they probably have referred the matter to the Postal Inspectors. FYI: The PIS is no joke - when I worked at the post office I saw them walk a station manager out of our office for stealing stamps. They had been watching him for months. Four big guys in suits with guns, like they had captured John Dillinger. I’d be very concerned if they are being accused of something even if they are 100% innocent. Not an accusation to let go of.

I think, part of the problem, where it stands now, is my brother being afraid to even approach the post office, in case they try something, even worse. I had encouraged all three of them to visit the post office, yesterday (Saturday) to see if they could obtain their missing mail, and to make sure the post office knew, that any hold order, were not legit. I thought that was the plan, but after 4 pm I called them to see how it went. Apparently they were too afraid to even approach the post office, expecting that worse things might happen to them, if they did. [My brother, unfortunately, chooses to keep his appearance, like a mountain man who just came down from the mountain.] It once almost got him apprehended by security, at our local airport. He was just there to pick up his daughter, arriving on an incoming flight. Security were calling him a vagrant - I guess that's what they call, "stereotyping".
Recently, when my brother called the sheriff's office concerning the post office's refusing to deliver their mail - he was told that the post office could do as it pleases. Not a very encouraging thing to hear.
I find this entire situation; beyond belief. If it weren't happening, right in front of me, and to people I know, well; I wouldn't think it could possibly happen, here in the USA. I wish I could end this thread with, "April fools". But strangely enough, it's really happening.

For me, it's all rather curious. Though, it would likely be different if it were happening to me, directly.
BTW the letter from the postmaster had attached to it, a pic of a gloved hand holding the assumed missing package. It clearly showed the name and address of the intended recipient; and a photo - likely a satellite photo, showing our acre, there in Marana. There was basically nothing written in the letter explaining why these pics were included with the letter; perhaps implying something Orwellian in nature.
Yesterday, early in the afternoon, my younger nephew, went to the post office to see if he could pick up his mail. He also asked about any reason for the "hold". The clerk told him that there was nothing official, that it was something to do with that particular delivery person, but he knew no details. That nephew drives a 2-door Honda civic, and it almost filled his back seat. It included more than 20 of his DVD deliveries, his brothers new license plate, and his fathers HMO card. Curious, how they, not only handed over his own mail, but his brothers and fathers, as well, even without him asking them to do so.
Since my brother, at least, involved the PIS (postal inspection service), perhaps they will have an answer for us, some day.
The next day, today, they began delivering again, without explanation. Apparently they are even ignoring what they said in their own letter.

Sounds to me that the delivery person was being "weird" and that management at that post office is now trying to get things straightened out in order to avoid repercussions. Bet they reassigned the delivery person to another route, at the very least.

We've lived in this house since 1992. When we bought it, it the address was "street". Around the time of the early map quest appearance, the donation pick up services couldn't find our house because map quest believed our house was "place". It's one of those deals where it's street to the west of us and place to the east. As it turns out there is one carrier for street and a different one for place. The street guy started rejecting our mail. Sometimes the place guy delivered it Sometimes not. I went to the post office and complained. Oh, it's the city who changed it, you'll have to talk to them. The city says they didn't change anything, but they CAN. So I officially changed it to place. Change of address fixed things for a while. But, changing your address from street to place is harder than you think. People entering it in databases don't notice the difference. The street mail carrier continued to refuse to deliver to us. They sent back prescription medications mailed to us. They can really screw up your life.

I'm glad you guys got that Postal Service issue resolved. Somehow I missed this post until today, but in years past I've had to write my Senator and my Congressman about not being able to get a mailbox set at a new house because the Post Master told me gas prices were too high to add any more mailboxes and I would be required by law to pick my mail up at a P.O. box instead.
That sounded like a load of bologna to me, so I wrote my state Senator. He basically told me to write my Congressman and to say that he, the State Senator had sent me, so I did. A couple of weeks later that same Post Master showed up at my house with a big black man with him. I thought he had gotten tired of me harassing him and had come to kick my butt. To my great surprise, he stepped out of the car and said, "Where do you want that new mailbox?"

I figured their first trip out there was to case the joint, just to see how many additional big black guys would be needed for kicking purposes...

For a long time, we were the only people on our dirt road who had a mailbox, but eventually, all 9 houses between here and 510 Road got their addresses moved from the Post Office to their residence. I had to dig a few post holes and buy a few mailboxes to make that happen, but we got 'er done.

Woo hoo. Since upgrading my desktop PCs with newer motherboards, so I could continue to run Windows 11 on them - and that worked out well. I've had these 3 older motherboards, still perfectly functional, just sitting here - so today I set one up with the Linux version called Ubuntu 23.10.1. I am making these posts using a PC configured with one of these old motherboards, and other previously idle hardware. It has been too long since I last used a Linux version, command line instructions aren't as necessary as they were in earlier times, but they're still free and run just fine on older hardware.

Woohoo! Tuscon, I have a terrible memory and learn slowly, but I have found that I still love the command line. I just look up what I want to do and then... copy and paste into the command line. With your version of Ubuntu, I bet you can do almost anything via GUI (menu) but you'll sometimes get it done more quickly and enjoyably using the command line.

In case you've been wondering why I haven't been as active recently.
I've been working with my G.I. doctor to clear up an infection with Helicobacter pylori and tomorrow morning I'm having a lithotripsy for some kidney stones in my left kidney. Hopefully, after that I should be able to get my garden started, then back on track.

Tucson,
That's wonderful news! (Not the health issue part) that's never good, but the getting back on track part sounded awesome!
Those kidney stones can be rough. I've had those put me out of business for the better part of a season before. I had to look up the H. Pylori, that sounded pretty rough too. I feel for ya ... I'm sure glad to hear that you're feeling better!

While living in rural Mexico we dealt with Helicobacter pylori quite a bit. One of our co-workers contracted it and nearly died but what most often happened was that folk would contract it and develop stomach cancer. back then it was relatively newly discovered. Most who had it experienced stomach ulcers and were simply told to eat a bland diet and cut down on stress, but it's an infection!
Glad you're getting it taken care of!
